The wheels are turning on one of the biggest festivals to hit Oak Cliff’s Bishop Arts District....Cliff Fest.

The event, which is slated for Nov. 14, will be a showcase of all things Oak Cliff and is being modeled after Taste of Addison, a food and entertainment festival held each year in the suburb north of Dallas.

“I want it to show the best of Oak Cliff,” Sheri Mathis, event coordinator for the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce. “All the things people don’t know about — the artists and galleries that are out there that people don’t know about, the restaurants, the neighborhood feel of it.”

Cedars Open Studio Tour, 11/22

Save the date for this artsy weekend event: the Sixth Annual Cedars Open Studios tour. The weekend event in the Cedars neighborhood south of Downtown features open house opportunities to see artists and their works.

The day is planned to conclude with a sunset performance art piece titled “Decorating the Tree” by glass blower Jim Bowman.

Art Conspiracy, 6/21

The art conspiracy group does it again. At 8pm, Saturday 6/21 at Sons of Hermann Hall they will feature another iteration of SEED with several bands and artists participating. For $5 you can listen to the sounds of Matthew and The Arrogant Sea, Beauxregard, Spector 45 and Pet Hospital.

There will be an artwork auction including some one-0f-a-kind moleskine journals. Since the end of May, 15 artists including Kim Cadmus Owens, Marcus Striplin, David Hopkins, Diane Sikes and Tina Medina have been filling up page after page of Moleskine journals with drawings, paintings, photography, lyrics, observations and more. During the SEED event, the journals will be auctioned along with original work from additional Dallas artists.

Hand-made local holidays

If you like finding original, well-wrought crafts, you might have already enjoyed one of the Make Urban Bazaars at the Dallas Farmers' Market (the next one is coming up Dec 1st). Now there's another group ijn the niche: Etsy Dallas. And while you might be accustomed to ordering crafts online through Etsy, you'll have a chance to check things out in person at their TRUNK SHOW!

Modern Homes on Tour

This weekend is the first annual AIA modern home tour. Eight single and multi-family residences throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area designed by Texas architects are featured. Two homes in Urban Reserve along with several infill homes in established Dallas neighborhoods make the list, and all of them have their own modern take on inhabiting an urban environment. Architecture firms represented include Mitchell Garman, Morrison Seifert Murphy, Oglesby Greene, Zero3, dsgn, Clifford Welch, Buchanan Architecture, and Cunningham Architects.

Architecturally Nosy

Sure, admit it. You like snooping around homes to see those little design details, whether it's at someone's party, an organized tour, an online real estate query, or an open house. You're nosy because you care about execution of design. Preservation Dallas's fall home tour is just a few weekends away, and this weekend it's mid-century modern and beyond on the Oak Cliff home tour. If the weather, football, the Fair, or work keeps you away from the Oak Cliff event this weekend, consider some couch-touring instead. This site pleasantly curates some of the signature gem homes in Dallas, from Tudor to post-modern. While we all know some of the homes on this list, it also includes some off the beaten track.

Upcoming: Slocum Street

The SLOCUM STREET ANTIQUES AND DESIGN ASSOCIATION and D Home kick-off the 9th annual October Slocum Street Night Walk on Thursday October 4th, beginning at 6pm.

Free to the public, more than 30 showrooms open their doors to share beautiful treasures and indulge guests with food, spirits and live music. Silent auctions at various showrooms and a vacation giveaway all benefit the Dallas County Medical Society Alliance Foundation philanthropies.

Valet parking is available at the entrance to Slocum Street at Hi Line Drive. Guests stroll up and down Slocum Street, which will be closed to vehicle traffic for the evening. Trolley service is also available.

Urban Arts Festival

This weekend (tonight and tomorrow) South Side on Lamar hosts the second annual Urban Arts Festival, featuring artists, musicians, and fun for all. It's a great opportunity to explore this developing sector of town and grassroots creative artists in Dallas.

Tonight is Art Love Magic, a Live Art Experience from 8:00 pm – Midnight in the Janette Kennedy Gallery/Artist Quarter. For $7 admission, you can enjoy simultaneous events as paintings, jewelry and ceramics come to life. Live music and poetry will be featured all night long.

Tomorrow from 10am to 8pm you can partake in a melange of arts and musical performances along with Make It Yourself stations sponsored by the Dallas Museum of Art. The evening is capped off with performances at Opening Bell and Poor David's.

Weekend Doings

The Denton Jazz Festival kicked off last night and continues through Sunday.

The DFW Dragon Boat Festival is tomorrow at Lake Carolyn in Irving. Team dragon boat races, kite flying, and performances by Asian dance groups will be complimented with music and food.

Spring: Arts are in the Air

You wouldn't guess it from the flurries yesterday, but the season of spring outdoor arts festivals has begun.


Today is the last day of the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. The weekend event features a street-festival environment including three stages of free music, exhibiting artists and plenty of snacks. Saturday's events included a Pooch Parade, a 5K run, and an art-glass blowing demonstration at the Firehaus gallery. See a full rundown on the Saturday scene at Pegasus. The festival concludes at 7pm tonight.

If the overcast skies and cool temps don't have you in the festive mood yet, there are more events in upcoming weekends:

Main Street Arts Festival (Fort Worth): April 19-22nd. 22nd annual presentation of live concerts, performance art, a juried art show and plenty of food.

Denton Arts and Jazz Fest (Denton): April 27-29th. 2,200 performers, 6 stages for professional and community performances, arts and crafts, food and games. Emphasis on jazz, bluegrass and other American music, although the 2006 festival also featured a belly dance recital.

CottonWood Arts Festival (Richardson): May 6-7th. A semi-annual gathering of artists and musicians amid the trees in the CottonWood Park.

The 4th Annual Dallas CityArts Celebration (Dallas): June 8-10th. Outdoor stages of music and dance performance, arts exhibitions, and opportunities to participate. Complimentary admission to the Nasher, the Crow Collection, and the DMA.


An additional compendium of festival events is at the Art News site. Admission to these festivals is free, but the art selection is so tempting, that it's hard to leave your wallet in your pocket. Most events kick off around 10am, but check with the festival's site for exact hours through each weekend.

DWR's Eames Film Festival

This Thursday evening December 7th, DWR at Travis/McKinney will feature several short films (including Powers of Ten and The Lounge Chair) by the Eameses along with refreshments and an opportunity to browse the store. Other stores have already hosted the event with good response.

The legacy of Ray and Charles Eames extends far beyond their classic furniture pieces. Taking a multidisciplinary approach to design long before that was the norm, the Eameses created over 100 short films between 1950 and 1982. Join DWR, in conjunction with the Eames Foundation and Herman Miller for the Home®, as we celebrate their film legacy. We’ll be screening seven films ranging from 1–30 minutes in length. Attendees are encouraged to stay for a discussion following the screenings. Refreshments will be served.

Art Conspiracy

I'm not sure what it is about artists and crime-themed benefits. First the Art Heist (see prior entry) and now the Art Conspiracy. December 1st marks the second annual fundraiser event at the Longhorn Ballroom.

For at $10 admission price, one can enjoy the works of local artists and 6 featured bands (The Happy Bullets, Fishboy, Salim Nourallah, John Holiday, and Peter Schmidt and His Gentlemen Scholars) while benefitting La Reunion, an artists' residency program in Oak Cliff. There will be an auction of the original art pieces while the bands rock the historic Longhorn Ballroom (see details).

Where does the artwork come from? At 7 a.m. November 30th, 150 empty canvases will be placed throughout the historic Longhorn Ballroom. Dallas artists will take shifts filling as many of the canvases as possible in a 24 hour period. At 7 p.m. December 1st, 2006, doors will open to the public and pieces will be auctioned off with starting prices of $20 per canvas. The event was staged for the first time last year. 850 people attended and the auction of 100 canvases raised more than $10,000 for The Children's Health Fund. Dragon Street Sip and Stroll

Looking for another shot of Design District ambiance? The Dragon Street Association of shops, galleries, and showrooms will give October's Slocom Street Style event a run for its buck. The event, hosted by and Modern Luxury Dallas magazine, will feature works from over fifteen artists in addition to ongoing exhibitions at various galleries.

"Tour 24 of the hottest art, antique and design showrooms in Dallas while sipping Spanish wine from Freixenet and Osborne. Look Good! Strike HD will be on hand creating a documentary of the event in high-definition video. A portion of the evening's sales will benefit the Meadows Museum and the Dallas Architecture Forum"

Twenty-five nationally- and locally-created Art Bulls for Charity wil be featured along the street, which will be closed to traffic to allow for better sauntering and exploation. The bulls are embellished by a mixture of celebrities and local artists, and the sale of the locally-created bulls (here's an example from Sara Hickman) and other commemorative pieces benefits the North Texas Food Bank and Share our Strength. The Art Bulls fundraiser is a venture of the wine and spirits company Gruop Osborne, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of their black bull logo.

Visit the Rachofsky House (for charity)

Modern art and design pieces for a good cause? A special "in" to see a famous Dallas modern home? It's time for the next installment of the Two by Two benefit and auction! Since its inception, the event has raised over $10 million. Two by Two is holding its eight-annual fundraiser for amfAR and the Dallas Museum of Art. The gala weekend of events is one of the DFW area's largest AIDS research charitable events. The auction features art and design pieces from a mixture of notorious artists. A fulLed off with an invitation-only preview party on Tuesday October 24th, the week proceeds through to Thursday's First Look, a "fashion forward, music filled and culinary delightful evening." Both events take place in the Rachofsky House, known to most as the eye-catching modern Richard Meier edifice on Preston Road. The $150 per ticket black tie event (tickets still available) features entertainment and the first opportunity to bid on silent auction pieces. There's also an after party at Ghost Bar at the W. The (sold-out) dinner benefit and auction is held on Saturday night. If you'd rather just visit the house, tours are given by appointment on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Or you could keep rubbernecking while driving down Preston.

Slocum Street Style, Oct 5

Let me acknowledge that Slocum Street is known for antiques, and that most of them do not at first glance fit a modern Dallas design aesthetic. But eclectic looks, blending across eras to combine well-loved, aged pieces and crisp modern lines, are being featured more and more. And modern design, in my opinion, should encompass good design elements regardless of age or provenance in order to establish unique and polished, personalized spaces. These carved marble candlesticks by Paul Mathieu (featured at Odegard) would sit nicely next to a Womb chair.

On Thursday October 5th, Slocum Street gets shut down and antique and design-loving Dallasites get the run of the district. The event is sponsored by D Home and and the Slocum Street Antique & Design Association. Between 6pm and 10pm, Slocum Street will be closed to traffic and trolley cars will shuttle event attendees among over 33 showrooms that line the street. Silent auction items will be offered at various stops. The nibbling, sipping and shopping benefits the Dallas County Medical Society Alliance Foundation.
