Another Discount Style Opportunity

This Thursday (if you're Trade) and Friday and Saturday (if you're not), the Design Center merchants are featuring a sale of fabulous proportions. Personal favorites Scott + Cooner and Ligne Roset will be represented, and the promise of some prices below cost is too much to resist. Just don't beat me to it!

Another thanks to D Home's Blog for the tip. Just hoping those Traders don't get all the goodies.

Smink Floor Samples

The fabulous modern furnishings store in Inwood Village is featuring the lowest prices of the year in order to move out stale sofas and make room for all the new Market finds. While prices still run close to a month's salary (for those who have to work), the quality and durability make up for it. While the sale began June 8th, some pieces are still out for the selling. Manufacturers include Minotti, Knoll and Living Divani.
Thanks to D Home's Blog for the tip.

Spring Shopping

Is it sale time again? Ligne Roset had a great sale this past November, and this weekend there's another three days of amazingly discounted fabulous furniture. Lots of things were snatched up on Friday, but a nice selection of chairs, sofas, and rugs, lamps, and accessories remains. Sectionals originally $7500 or more are now less than $5000. Sure, it's still a steep price for a couch, but you can't find a better price on the brand.

This weekend is thr spring fling "Goods to Go" sample sale at Market Hall. Continuing through tomorrow, it promises "deals on apparel, decorative accessories, gifts, jewelry, furniture, manufacturer samples and much more". Admission is $6, but you get a dollar off if you bring a canned good with you.

Lights Fantastic Clearance!

Lights Fantastic on Greenville Avenue has long been selling fabulous modern light fixtures and fans.

Their adjacent clearance center, Lights Out, is closing down, and all remaining items must go this weekend, with an extra 20% off to help it all move. While hit or miss on the selection on clearance, the store's full inventory is without compare.

Modern Dallas Gardening

As spring marches on, and with Tax Day behind us, we can turn towards modern-influenced gardening, and this weekend is a great time to get started. The Dallas Arboretum's annual plant sale is April 21 & 22nd, and features Dallas-friendly plants, including several that won't show up on the shelves of the big box centers. The Dallas County Master Gardener Association is sponsoring its own plant sale the morning of April 21. This sale will feature specimens from local Master Gardener collections and from students at the Multiple Careers Magnet Center School, with proceeds to their vocational programs.
If you're not looking to get any loam wedged under your nails, consider delegating a local landscaping firm with the design. Redenta's has a few great example designs, and for more inspiration, check out UK site mylandscapes.

So Jealous

Dallas has some film and TV scene of its own (Prison Break most notably, and Walker, Texas Ranger among others), but nothing to rival New York and Los Angeles. With filming comes sets, and with sets comes set dressing. And when the filming is done, the stuff's got to go somewhere! In New York, Props for Today is the outlet and sadly we're over 1,500 miles away from what's probably a superb warehouse clearance sale. Pieces on the block include chairs from The Devil Wears Prada, The Good Shepherd, The Sopranos, and Saturday Night Live. They will also have a selection of brand new items from top designers including coffee tables, mirrors, and standing candelabras. Floor samples include daybeds, chaise lounges and sectionals for up to 75% off retail.

While I grumble about missing out on modern, star-touched pieces, I'll have to console myself on the local warehouse options: Ligne Roset, Jan Showers, and Scott and Cooner are still good for a time-to-time fix.

After XMas Web Sales

While modernist designs often lack spare storage, there's some sales afoot, giving you a chance to stock up on decorative pieces for Christmas 2007 if your space allows. The 4-foot mirrored tree and 3-foot red lit trees are now 50% off. Wire trees and wreaths and tons of other options are also available at CB2, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, and Pier1.

The pick of ornaments up for grabs includes simple color-stripe globes (now $18 for 6) and bead-stripe ornaments. CB2 has an assortment of glass, coiled wire, and beaded ornaments on sale, and Pier1's entire Feliz Navi-Mod collection featuring several color palettes is 50% off.

There's also some finds to put into use right away. Gump's online sale offers a variety of modern pieces like this Michael Ruh vase, where each stem sits in its own green glass pod within the large cylinder. It's now 50% off, $47.50. An owl-shaped mango wood carved stool is a great accent for an eclectic entryway and has the bonus of adding storage (now $95). The Whitney ceramic lamp is a sleek shot of color. CB2, West Elm and Chiasso (where the "RING10" code gets an additional 10% off through 12/30) all have some great offerings that can bring a new, affordable punch to your mid-winter decor. From what I hear, IKEA's got a sale as well.

What I've been waiting for

This item from the Shopping blog is music to my ears: an annoucement of Scott + Cooner's semi-annual warehouse clearance sale! The last time I visited their sale, a fabulous Foscarini pendant fixture and two Flos sconces were mine for a fraction of their cost.
Need a lunch break?
Then hurry and head over to the Scott + Cooner warehouse at 1400 Turtle Creek (not the showroom location). Through Sunday, the modern decor company is slashing prices on sofas, beds, lighting, desks and chairs to make space for new merchandise.
"We just don't have the real estate to keep things that long," says company rep Rebecca O'Dell. "Some of the pieces were showroom samples other might be new but have a slight scratch."
Expect savings from 20 to 70 percent she adds, and, best of all, to see prices dip as Sunday approaches to clear it all out! They're open until 5:30 p.m. tonight, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Mark and Larry's Retirement Sale

Deep Ellum perennial Mark & Larry's Stuff has announced its closing. As Mark-Brian's theater and acting commitments have kicked up, the time available to run the store has dwindled down, and the store will close its last sale on December 23rd. Voted Best Gift Store in 2001 and Best Place to Buy Stuff You Don't Need in 2002 by the Dallas Observer, the store has offered a mixture of design pieces, jewelry, gifts and gags in two Deep Ellum locations for the past decade. They describe it as:
"This store specializes in 'Stuff.' We don't carry anything you need to have, but you sure do want it. Everything we buy has to make us go 'oooh' and 'wow'. We're both very picky. We try to keep our prices reasonable (80% of the store retails at $35 or less) but every now and then we find something that is so extraordinary that we must carry it....well, the 'stuff' we carry tends to be unique, most is not really mass produced, and therefore not as readily available. We carry an excess of 2,000 unique items for you to choose from, along with a vast card selection with well with over 1000 images. We highly recommend you come visit us!"
Right now, everything at the Deep Ellum landmark is at least 10% off, and a large selection of funky candles, bath products, Blenko glassware, cards and books is available.

Ligne Roset + Sample Sale = Nirvana

Thanks to a short post on Dallas Shopping Blog, I was drawn to visiting the Ligne Roset store in the Design District in search of super style at a discount. If there's one thing better than fabulous lines, it's finding them at a nice price. What can I say, I love getting something I love at a bargain! The Hi-Line drive store, which opened five years ago as one of the first design stores open to the public (the other Dallas location is on McKinney at Knox, see prior post), is spacious and full of fabulous sleek arrangements. There were several discounted pieces, including a fab gray Feng couch and matching daybed, a super chocolate-brown ultrasuede sectional, rugs and several occasional chairs. Resident kitty Vito had staked out on of the best chairs for himself, showing off just how comfortable European modern can be.

Alexa Grossman, owner of both local Ligne Roset stores, is one of the coolest furniture mavens I've met. She's knowledgable, savvy about high-end modern furniture (with numerous family members and friends in the business, she started learning the trade in her teens) and not one to hold back on her opinions. Her most important advice, getting good style that fits your personal taste is worth the wait of custom order, on sale or not. Designer furniture is an investment, she says, and prorating the purchase over several credit cycles can make the hippest furnishings available to folks without a large designer budget.

The sample sale wraps up soon, but Alex promises another one in the spring, and then probably only an annual spring sale after that.

Cantoni Modern Furniture

With the Partners Card in hand, "the world's finest original contemporary collections" just got 20% more affordable for the next week. The giant (30,000 square foot) North Dallas showroom features scene after scene of modern, serene, and comfortable arrangements. Selections include American Leather, Dellarobbia (whose two-piece Yasmin sectional pictured below, is very tempting), and Artek. A staff of sales and design consultants is available to assist, but I was able to wander the store for fifteen minutes without an officious intrusion.

Cantoni began in Dallas in 1984 and has expanded to five stores (also in Houston, Atlanta, Irvine, Los Angeles) and an outlet center around the corner from the showroom. The outlet features a mixture of floor sample chairs, bedrooms, lighting, and accessories, often 40% or more off the showroom price. If you're in love with the Menlo Park or Astoria sectionals, however, be sure to check out the American Leather outlet before you break out the AmEx...there might be a better deal!

Storehouse Furniture Closing

There's not much explanation on the website, just an announcement:

Storehouse Furniture, known for its mid-price upscale modern/contemporary furnishings, will be closing all seventy of its locations nationwide in the next few weeks. Discounts now are 15% to 30%, but will likely increase until the $60 million inventory is gone. The closing is part of a bankruptcy liquidation of the chain as its parent, The Rowe Companies, undegoes Chapter 11 reorganization. When efforts to sell the chain failed, the remaining option was liquidiation to generate some cash (news article1, article2). For Dallasites, this means a few good deals at the Inwood Village and Galleria locations before bidding adieu to stores. Good thing that West Elm is waiting in the wings...the Mockingbird Station's grand opening is October 18th.

American Leather Outlet

Cruising on Craigslist that helped me find this outlet. I can't believe I hadn't heard of this place before today! American Leather, based in Dallas, produces beautiful furniture which is sold at Cantoni and the formerly fabulous (now closed) Urban Home. In addition, AL manufactures private label pieces for Design within Reach, Room and Board, and Crate and Barrel. Rated as one of D Magazine's "Best of" picks back in 2004, the outlet store in Grand Prarie (map) features an inventory of overstocks, production samples, and customer returns. Quality varies from excellent (photo shoot or cancelled orders) to good. They occasionally place listings on Craigslist, and if you mention the site, you'll get an extra 10% off the purchase. Some selections today included a sage green Menlo Park four-piece sectional that retails for $11K for around $4K and a brown Hahn sofa that retails for $1600 at R&B for $999. Rick Lee's Odyssey recliner in dusty green leather was marked down to $650, a steal compared with the $1700 price online. Most pieces were in very good condition; I noticed only a few scuffs on the side of a cream microfiber sectional. Each item's price is marked down every month until sold. Colors and selection are limited, but the stock replenishes often, particularly around the time of furniture market shows. If you need a matching piece, one can be custom built for a price just over wholesale and takes about four weeks. Transporting your great finds is up to your own arrangement. The store is open Tuesdays through Saturdays.
